University of Canterbury

Directions, Transport and Travel To and From Canterbury University
(Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand)

Canterbury can be reached from major cities in New Zealand via rail and motorway, and from Australia and most other continents by air or ferry. Land travel can be slow on the countryside because of the shard curves and slight congestion in busy areas.

Travel by Air

Visitors arriving by plane usually arrive at the Christchurch International Airport at Harewood. Often said to be the best airport in New Zealand, Christchurch serves most of the flights entering the South Island. The airport is conveniently close to bus and shuttle services, which serve direct lines from the airport to most of Canterbury.

Car Parking

There are limited parking services in Canterbury, and most of the car parks are in Christchurch. Covered and on-street parking options are available, as well as monthly access cards for long-stay parking. For shoppers and visitors, free and paid parking spaces abound in malls, restaurants, and other public places.

Travel by Trains and Rail

Several rail services run through Canterbury, most of them plying through Christchurch. Southbound passengers can take the TranzCoastal Rail Service in Picton, which takes a particularly scenic route over vineyards, coastlines, and river valleys. Coastal rail service is provided by the TranzAlpine, connecting Christchurch and Greymouth on either end.

Travel by Buses and Coachl

Bus services connect the city centre to major areas in the province, particularly Christchurch, and trips are often long and tedious because of Canterbury's winding roads. However, bus is one of the cheapest forms of transport and are ideal for tourists on a budget. For large groups, many charter buses are available for hire.

Travel by Taxi

Next to private cars, taxis are the best way to get around Canterbury. Several taxi services ply the city regularly, and taxis usually line up at public places such as malls, parks, and airports. You can book a taxi or arrange for a pickup service from airports or train stations by calling one of the taxi companies in the province.
